Stavropol Krai is situated in the central part of Ciscaucasia and on the Northern extremities of the Greater Caucasus. Most of the territory is situated on the Stavropol Upland. The Caucasian Mineralnye Vody [Mineral Waters] region with laccolithic mountains is located in the southern part of the region.
The region has deposits of gas, oil, polymetals, and construction materials.
Key industry sectors include: electrical power production, food, chemical products, machine building, and oil and gas production and processing industries. Mineral therapeutic waters constitute the region's main wealth.
Stavropol Krai is the largest resort region of the Russian Federation, and the wealth, diversity and value of its mineral waters and therapeutic muds have no equivalents on the Eurasian continent. Some of the key resorts are: Caucasian Mineralnye Vody, Teberda, and Kumagorsk. Caucasian Mineralnye Vody resorts accommodate over 600,000 visitors annually.
Stavropol Krai is a leading agricultural region of Russia. It takes first place in terms of the country’s grain output per capita. Agriculture is focused on grain and sunflower cultivation, and cattle and fine-wool sheep breeding. Horticulture, viniculture, poultry and hog breeding, and apiculture are also well-developed.
The federal M29 highway (Krasnodar—Baku) and a part of the Moscow—Rostov-On-Don – Baku railway line pass by the region’s territory. The region has 2 international airports, in Stavropol and in Mineralnye Vody.
The region has an extensive and developed network of field and cross-country pipelines (oil pipelines of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, North Caucasus oil pipeline, North Caucasus – Center gas pipeline, Blue Stream gas pipeline, and Mozdok – Rostov-On-Don product pipeline).
