Krasnoyarsk Krai is situated in Eastern Siberia and in the very heart of the Eurasian Continent. Both the geographical center of Russia (Lake Vivi) and the northmost point of Eurasia (Cape Chelyuskin) are located here. In the North, Krasnoyarsk Krai is washed by the Kara Sea and the Laptev Sea. Its main river is the Yenisey.
The region has an extensive network of natural reserves: Stolby Reserve, Yergaki and Shushenskiy Bor National Parks, Putoran Plateau, and the Tunguska Meteorite Reserve.
Krasnoyarsk Krai is one of Russia’s richest in natural resources. It accumulates over 95% of Russia's deposits of nickel and platinoids, over 20% of gold, 70% of coal, 21% of apitites, 18% of timber, and 42% of zinc-lead ore. 25 oil and gas fields have been developed. The region also has considerable hydropower potential (the Yenisey and the Angara rivers), and is rich in furs.
4 large higher education institutions of Krasnoyarsk provide the base for the Siberian Federal University (SFU). In addition, the region has 16 higher education establishments and 7 research institutes.
Krasnoyarsk Krai is one of the most economically developed Russian regions. It is one of ten donor regions, which are responsible for over 50% of Russia’s GDP. The structure of the regional economy is characterized by one of the highest shares of industry (over 55%) in GRP among Russia's constituent entities. Main industry sectors are: mining; manufacturing activities (86%), and electric power, gas and water production and distribution.
The structure of the manufacturing complex: metallurgy (75.0%), machine-building, forestry, chemical industry; publishing and polygraphic industry; coke and oil product manufacture; production of electrical, optical and electronic equipment; light industry; and food industry.
Krasnoyarsk Krai has access to the Northern Sea Route and also has an important transportation junction in Krasnoyarsk, at the point of intersection of the Yenisey River with the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Moscow-Vladivostok highway. Also, the South Siberian Railway and two federal highways pass by the territory of Krasnoyarsk Krai. The region has 22 airports.
