Smolensk Region is situated in the central part of the East European Plain, on the Smolensk and Vyazma Uplands. It is here where the watershed lies that divides three major fluvial systems: the Volga River (the Vazuza, Gzhat, Ugra rivers), the Dnieper (the Sozh, Desna, Vop, Vyazma rivers) and the Zapadnaya Dvina (the Zapadnaya Dvina, Kasplya rivers) basins. The region’s territory has several hundred lakes (such as Kasplya, Svaditskoye, Velisto, Akatovskoye, Baklanovskoye, and Kalyginskoye). Large water reservoirs include the Vazuza Reservoir, the Yauza Reservoir, Smolensk Reservoir, and Desnogorsk Reservoir.
The eastern and south-eastern parts of the region have deposits of brown coal belonging to the Moscow Coal Basin, peat, sapropels, mineral salt, phosphorites, calc-tufa, and limestone. It also has resources of mineral therapeutic muds and high-quality mineral waters and brines.
There are 36 higher education institutions in the region. The city of Smolensk has 1145 years of history and some unique architectural monuments. The Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park has been established with the purpose of their preservation.
The economy is mainly driven by industry, including engineering, machine building and metal processing, chemical production, jewelry, woodworking and food sectors.  The region is also known for its power production (Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant, Smolensk GRES). Smolensk also has a well-developed agricultural processing industry (grain production, flax growing, dairy and beef cattle breeding, feed production and potato growing).
Main transportation hubs of the region are Smolensk and Vyazma. 4 transit gas pipelines, a gas-main pipeline, 3 federal highways and the Moscow – Minsk – Brest railway line pass by the region's territory.
