Most of the territory of Penza Region is situated in the Volga Upland.
Its main rivers are: the Sura, the Moksha, and the Khoper. Chernozem soil covers about 65% of the region’s territory.
Penza Region has many museums and cultural centers, including such as Tarkhany State Lermontov Museum Reserve, Trinity Skanov Monastery and more.
Today, Penza Region is an industrial and agricultural region of the country. Industry is the leading sector of the economy, accounting for up to 25% of GRP and for 45% of the region’s tax revenues. Industrial production in the region comprises the following sectors: machine building, power supply, fuel production, iron and steel, chemical and petrochemical, metal-fabricating, woodworking and timber, pulp and paper, construction materials, glass, porcelain and earthenware, light, food, flour and cereals, and compound feed industries.
The agricultural industry accounts for about 20% of GRP. Agriculture is focused on crop production and stock farming. Wheat, rye, buckwheat, panicum, barley, sugar beet, sunflower, hemp and other crops are grown here. Penza Region is one of the major crop producers in Russia. Dairy and beef cattle breeding, sheep raising, and poultry breeding are also developed in the region.
The region’s territory has an extensive transportation system. The total length of railway track in operation amounts to 829km. Airways of federal importance pass over Penza Region (Penza airport). The total length of motorways exceeds 9,143km, and 3 major highways cross the region’s territory.
