Ivanovo Region is situated in the non-chernozem belt of European Russia. The region has a wealth of mixed forests occupying 46% of its territory, as well as extensive water resources. The region has more than 100 rivers (the Volga, the Klyazma, the Uvod, the Nerl, the Teza, the Lukh and others), 94 water reservoirs (Gorkiy Reservoir, Uvod Reservoir and others), 150 lakes (including Rubskoye and Svyatoye), and 9 mineral water springs.
The region has 13 higher education institutions, its scientific and technological potential is mostly focused on engineering and natural sciences.
Ivanovo Region lies at the very heart of the ‘Golden Ring of Russia’ tourist route. The route includes the towns of Ivanovo, Kineshma, Yurievets, Ples, Shuya, and Palekh. A large number of museums is concentrated in the region.. Ivanovo Region is also famous for its traditional arts and crafts, particularly Palekh and Kholuy lacquer boxes and miniatures.
Ivanovo Region is the largest Russian center for textile production and machine building. Over 70% of Russian cotton and flax fabrics are produced here, as well as about 70% of Russian mobile cranes, machining center modules, excavators, etc. Industrial production index in the region in 2007 was 108.2%.
The region’s transport infrastructure includes all types of transport. 2 federal highways pass through the region’s territory, as well as routes connecting the adjacent regions. Ivanovo is a railway station of the Northern Railways. Ivanovo Yuzhny International Airport serves all types of modern aircraft.
The Volga River provides navigable waterways (Kineshma River Port).
