Chelyabinsk Region is situated on the slopes of the Southern Urals and Zauralye. The main rivers in the region are the Ural and the Miass. There are over 3,000 lakes (the largest of which are Uvildy and Turgoyak; Khomutinskoe and Podbornoye are lakes with curative waters) and several reservoirs.
The region contains over 200 natural reserves and national parks, including the world famous Ilmen State Reserve, the Arkaim museum reserve one of the settlements of the “Strana Gorodov” [nation of cities]; the Ignatiev Caves with drawings by primitive man and more.
The natural landscape of the region creates unique opportunities for the development of ski-based tourism (20 ski resort complexes). The favorable climate, radon waters and sapropelic muds are widely used in resorts and health farms.
The scientific potential of the region is represented by 34 institutes of higher education and 40 R&D organizations.
The minerals of the Southern Urals are distinguished by a richness and great diversity. There are enormous deposits of the majority of metals here, beds of incredibly precious stones and innumerable reserves of all manner of mineral resources.
Chelyabinsk region is one of the most well-developed industrial regions of the country. The Midus Interfax rating agency confirms credit ratings of Aal.ru and RUS-1 for the region.
The following dominate the industrial production structure of the region:
•    Ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy (64.2% of the industrial product volume from the region);
•    Machine building and metals processing (over 12%);
•    Electrical power (5.8%);
Construction industry (5.5%) (in 2007 1.67 million sq.m of residential property was commissioned, a growth of 135% over 2006).
The region boasts a favorable economic, geographical and strategic position, as it lies on the intersection of major routes, linking the Urals with the central part of Russia, Siberia and Kazakhstan. The region is crossed by the Trans-Siberian Railroad and 3 federal motorways.
