Structure:
Advantages:
The advantage is the variety of the resources (for the fuel, metallurgic, chemical and forestry industries) and the seaside geographic location. The large sea ports (the Murmansk port that never freezes over and the seasonal Arkhangelsk port) create conditions for exporting products into the world market and the transportation of products along the Severny (Northern) sea route.
Priority development trends:
according to the project "The Concept for Long-Term Social and Economic Development of the Russian Federation" for the period until 2020.
  • The production of the oil and gas resources together with the development of the shelf of the Barents Sea (with continuing development of the resources of the Timano-Pechorskaya province) is becoming the most important raw materials industry of the economic region;
  • The development of the sea transport must be focused on the development of the ties with the world market. In the long-term perspective, there are plans to restore the functions of the Northern sea route, including the ports with the appropriate transportation and other types of infrastructure;
  • The development of the technical and technological renovation of the basic industries: marine production of the oil and gas resources, the pulp and paper industry, lumbering, timber processing, and fishing industry is of great significance;
  • The specificity of the recreational resources and the relative proximity of the key Russian and European tourism markets have created opportunities for the development of cultural, ecological and sports tourism.
